The main logic around crediting icons is that if you see an icon you like, credit allows you to go to the source and find more. sandrock wrote a great explanation (http://sandrock.livejournal.com/352015.html) of this concept. While I know some icon makers may desire credit for more egocentric reasons than this, in the end it is very helpful to the whole LJ community.

Comments also help everyone out. When the icon maker knows what icons are the most successful, they can create more icons that people like and use. Once again, I know not every icon maker sees it this way, but in general, it can be very helpful to the creation of good icons.

Great. And crediting artists will help people find out what else they may have drawn if they happen to like what they see in the icons. It's a win-win situation.

I'm fine with crediting icon makers, because it makes it easier to find good icons if everyone makes the effort. But the burden of crediting is on them for the very same reason.

Yes! Exactly. :) While I was only answering your icon question and not trying to get into the actual fanart issue itself, I will say now that I absolutely am against not crediting anything (whether it be fanart, photography, screencaps, scans, or whatever it may be) for this reason and just plain being respectful to other people. If everyone would credit everything they can, the creation and spreading of things throughout this site and the internet would be a much smoother process. :)

Ah, you are correct. I apologize for my poor word choice. Just trying to make the logic of iconists more clear. While we can't control the crediting another person provides, we can control what crediting we do. :)
