I'm not sure why anyone with a 'knee-jerk hatred of religion' ought to watch Noir. It's not exactly likely to change their minds, after all.

My feeling is that would depend on what your interpretation of what being a Soldat entails is.

Hmm. Perhaps. In my opinion, both factions of Soldats try to protect the innocent through... questionable means. Which is nasty, but pragmatic.

However, the religious faction is really, very joyful about the whole thing rather than considering it a regretful necessity (granted, I'm not certain about Altena, but definitely the nuns and that really creepy village). They consider their top murderers to be saints for crying out loud!

At least the business guys recognise that their dealings aren't really on the level. The religious guys are practically fanatics.

So... this is my view of Soldats and my reasons for thinking that Noir doesn't put religion in an overly positive light.

There's also the fact that Noir's presentation of a specific religion (in this case, Altena and her murder-worship) does not translate into the trans-fictional message of the show, which Mashimo and others have said is very spiritual. Kirika couches her eventual realisation of what's what in terms of sin and redemption, and so does the show generally. Altena represents a perversion of all that is good, not something evil in and of herself like Friday Monday in Madlax. A big part of Noir's message is the idea that evil (les Soldats) only survives by glomming on to good things (the spiritual sin-redemption dynamic that Kirika eventually finds) and twisting the fuck out of them.

Huh. I've never really seen Noir in that light and I'm not sure I can.

For one thing, I totally fail to see how Kirika couches anything in terms of sin and redemption. Well, OK, redemption is important to her, but not in any way I could possibly consider 'spiritual', never mind 'religious'.

But then again, I'm not a very spiritual person, so maybe that's why I fail to see anything spiritual about Kirika's journey to find herself and a place in the world.
