I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting positive feedback, and I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring comments to kudos.

What bothers me is where you combine the two and it becomes an obligation - what bothers me is the idea that, one, readers have an obligation to give positivity to writers and, two, only certain forms of that feedback are acceptable. That bugs the hell out of me.

This. If a reviewer's comment isn't long enough or detailed enough for a writer's liking, or if they give genuine constructive critique and a writer gets upset about that, or things of that sort...after a while, I can see where some of them will be like, "Well, it seems I can't please them no matter what I say, so why bother saying anything at all?"

Personally, the fact that someone's taking the time to read something I wrote at all makes me happy in and of itself. Any other kind of support they show beyond that, be it a comment or a kudos or whatever, is a wonderful bonus :).
