Some people leave "meh, kudos". Others leave kudos when they finish a fic. Doesn't mean they liked it particularly, just that they didn't backbutton.

Who the fuck spends that extra energy to hit a button on something they didn't enjoy or feel anything positive toward instead of just moving on?

The kind of people who will tell a little white lie that they like your shirt when they don't actually like it at all, or who smile and nod at people they don't feel warm and friendly towards. It's weird, I'll grant you, but it's not at all uncommon.

AYRT - The vast majority of people leave kudos when they feel generally positive about something. Doesn't mean they loved it, but they liked it enough to finish it and want to give the author an indication that reading it was an overall positive experience for them. Kudos are not value neutral and I think it's absurd to suggest they are.

Hell, some people leave comments because they feel obligated to and not because they actually want to. And lots of people leave comments that sound a lot more enthusiastic than the person actually is. My feelings about a fic are mixed all the time but I rarely bring up the stuff I didn't like because I don't want to be rude. So my comments often end up sounding like I loved a fic immensely when it reality it was maybe a 7.5/10 for me.

Point being, if you think the meaning behind kudos is ambiguous, boy do I have news for you about comments.

I don't agree with this at all. I am well aware that comments leave out things the person doesn't like, and I take into account that when someone says 'this is the best ever' they actually mean 'I liked it'. That being said, comments are still great and it makes me happy to know that this person liked it enough to comment.

Kudos on the other hand ARE value neutral as the person above explained. I've heard way too many people say they use it as a 'I made it to the end, even if I didn't particularly enjoy it' or some people kudos even though they don't get to the end just to give the author a pat on the shoulder as in 'Thanks for your time even if I didn't enjoy it.'

'Nothing' is exactly what kudos mean.

'Nothing' is exactly what kudos mean.

I find this such a senselessly negative, pessimistic way of looking at something positive. I'm so glad I don't see it how you do.

For me, making it to the end of a fic means it was decent. Leaving kudos means I enjoyed it. Leaving a comment means I LOVED it. I do the same with how I talk about books or movie. I'm not going to lie about my experience for someone else's benefit.

Words are a hell of a lot less ambiguous than kudos, though.

I leave kudos when I finish a fic. It doesn't necessarily mean I liked it.

Kudos are ambiguous.
