They're nice, let's be fair, kudos are an extremely low effort means of praise. It's the equivalent of a Facebook "like" and most people quite rightly don't set a high value on those, either.

The effort of leaving kudos doesn't have any effect on the perceived value for me. I've gotten better about commenting on fics myself, but I spent years only ever giving kudos. There are fics that made me shriek with joy, run frantically around my apartment, sob, swoon, flail, gasp, and everything in between...and the only measure of my adoration for those fics is a kudos.

There are people who will comment when they feel generally positive about a fic, and there are people who will give only kudos on a fic they can't stop obsessing over for weeks.

None of it is cut and dried.

Would I generally prefer to get a single comment over a single kudo? Absolutely. But I also know the existence of kudos has radically improved the fic posting experiences for me. 300 kudos is comforting to me in a way that ten comments isn't.

Forget 10 comments. One single comment is worth more to me than 300 kudos.

Yep.

That is so fucking weird. It's like y'all have no concept of how statistics relate to reality or something. You place more value in a single person liking your fic than 300 people liking your fic. Fandom must be a really hard place for you.

It's not 300 people liking the fic, it's 300 people feeling "meh" about the fic versus one person liking it enough to comment.
