(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 09:26 am (UTC)(link)I get this entirely btw.
I remember watching some design show I don't even know how long ago, and it was between this one guy who did so many different interesting things and this girl who literally made nothing out of acrylic.
His criticism was that his most recent creation was so 'man cave', (while me and my mom were both dying to make one for ourselves for our dining room) while for the \first time ever/ a single judge finally mentioned that yeah, he has a style, but there has not been a single challenge she had used a different material other than acrylic... (even in the scrap/junkyard episode where she scrounged up, \you guessed it/, some more fucking acrylic she machined into I don't even give a shit what)
But oh no, \'she's never made a desk before she said, so it's totally out of her comfort zone! He keeps going back to the same masculine design that no woman would want in their home, we don't see the same growth by trying new things from him./'. (paraphrased but like to the bare minimum, because to this day I still remember how confused both me and my mother was over how biased a competition could possibly be..,)
The guy lost, just like that. Despite creating so many different, interesting variations on his own style who received no criticism, only praise for his honestly brilliant designs. And her, well, she won it all. Using no material other than acrylic to build whatever furniture she was tasked to craft.
This makes me super frustrated because I work in metal manufacturing, and there is little more than knowing how to work the machine and applying that to the material you have in order to create this shit. At that point it's connect A to B, all her lines were straights so it was simply an cut and screw situation. And while her creations were nice, and acrylic isn't exactly that easy to work with, she did NOTHING but that and it pissed me off.
