This was my first series by Ikuhara and I was really disappointed. The animation is great, the premise is interesting, and even the humor feels like it should be my thing, but it's just...not. I found it hard to get to know the characters and care about them, and I ended up dropping it because at some point I just forgot the next episode came out.

I still plan on watching his other work, but this wasn't a good introduction for me, lol. The ED is still one of the greatest things I've seen, though.

I liked it tons and tons better than Yurikuma Arashi, though I'm not sure I'd say that is becaues it was better as much as it was that I suspect YKA was so dense that that there was a ton of stuff that went over my head simply becaues I couldn't get cultural references and/or because I watched it subbed and there was so much non-verbal information to take in that I had a hard time hanging on.

Much as I love Sarazanmai, I'll have to agree that the story was all over the place. Like, what was the main message supposed to be? Because there was the ONE story about the kappa boys and the things they needed to realise, then there was the entire plot with Keppi and the Otters who were going to take over the world but that was somehow the least important part of what was happening, and then the last arc spent SO MUCH TIME suddenly infodumping about how Reo&Mabu are very tragic but what has that got to do with anything. Separately, all three storylines could've been an anime on their own. But for the three of them to come together into something coherent, and for the themes of the story to feel natural and not pastede on yey, this anime would've needed to be twice as long as it was.

That was my biggest hangup about the series. Why would you build up this whole apocalyptic supernatural war backstory, and then not have it affect the plot or the stakes in any way?

Actually I think both YKA and Sarazanmai had a similar problem but YKA probably hid it better -- both could really use more episodes. I think Ikuhara just has so many ideas that he really needs more episodes in order to articulate them and he's not good at paring his stories down to fit in a smaller episode count.

I feel this so much. Penguindrum is my favourite Ikuhara anime (there, I said it), and it's not necessarily because the idea is so much better than YKA and Sarazanmai. It's just got the time to let us get to know these kids, and to let the story unfold at a pace that isn't throwing riddles at the audience at every corner the story turns.

Man I knew I had fallen out of the Anime community but I have no idea who Ikuhara is.

He's the Utena guy.

...which must be rough, because everything he's done since has been judged against Utena, and that's an awfully high bar for a creator to hit twice.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming it's Kunihiko Ikuhara, who I only know because he directed Sailor Moon and Utena.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay. Kunihiko Ikuhara's really not that famous outside certain anime circles.

He directed the Sailor Moon R movie, Sailor Moon S series, Revolutionary Girl Utena (series and movie), then took like a decade-long hiatus from anime before coming back to direct Mawaru Penguindrum, Yurikuma Arashi, and Sarazanmai.

Anon who didn't know who Ikuhara was

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Now I feel I should have known. Sailor Moon S was my fave season of the original Sailor Moon anime.

I didn't think the writing was any harder to follow than average Ikuhara, and it was better in a lot of ways than Yurikuma. I liked Yurikuma, but if Ikuhara could get another series after that, I think he's doing fine.

Disliking Ikuhara has never been unpopular in anime fandom. He has his devoted and rabid fans, and he also has his devoted haters who would be more than happy to defend your opinion against any attacks and moreso.

I actually loved this series! I haven't watched any other Ikuhara shows though, so I have nothing to judge it against on that side of things.
