God, like, I know it was a new show and the first seasons of many shows have some major stumbling points but jesus.

oh, god, THAT episode.
Bizarrely enough, the racist crap wasn't in the first draft of the script. Originally the aliens didn't look like Black people, they were just generic Trek non-humans, one of the directors was apparently a total racist and having the aliens look like Black people was his idea. Still a dumb episode even if you took out the racism though.
