Discord Fandoms

Are any of you in fandom discords? How would I go about doing such a thing if I wanted to?

Honestly, most of the fandom discords I joined were from existing comms and message boards I had been a part of for years. And once I was in a discord, some people would advertise discord servers for a different fandom, which I then did or did not join. It just varies.

It's also possible to search for servers in the app itself, though that also gives mixed results.

I've joined some, both official and unofficial and they've all had one of the following fates:
Became too massive for me to actively engage in
Stopped being officially affiliated with the canon's creators. Still a good place.
Became a group of friends who used to have the fandom in common
Thourghly ignored because I didn't jive with the people there, not because drama or anything it's just neutral mutual mehs
Been abandonned by everyone.
Not all that active but when it has bursts it's good.

How I generally find them is:
A friend linked them
I've found a link on the fandom's tag on tumblr (this is how I find most of them)
The creator(s) of the canon linked the discord (and often it was run by them)

i am in a few. some are so active and populated that there's a new conversation every hour and i never bother backreading unless something rly interesting happened only very recently haha. and some are smaller and rly chill and convos happen over the course of like days. i think both are fun in their own ways.

i don't use reddit, so i have never found any of the fandom discords i am in through reddit itself. but most of the fandom servers i am in are associated w the reddit board of the fandom. so maybe you'd find luck searching those out!

I try to tell myself I won't join any for new fandoms, and eventually I always end up in at least one or two more.

Usually they advertise on twitter or tumblr. If you look hard enough in the tags you'll find a bunch of them, even for really old fandoms.

Recommend me a new fandom

I'm looking for a new recent or semi-recent show to watch. Mostly I'm interested in fantasy/scifi/detective/somewhat historical shows (e.g. Mandalorian, Prodigal Son, early Strange Things, Mad Men, Crown), but not in medical/relationship/political (Grey's Anatomy, Skins, Scandal).

Feel free to also recommend comics or manga that fall into this category.

I'm really enjoying Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. It is a mix of fantasy, detective, and historical.

Doom Patrol is a comic book show that leans closer to being a fantasy/horror than comic book. It's completely balls to the wall insane, but is really compelling.

Last Man is urban fantasy, with boxng, mafia and monsters, though most of the detectiv-ing is done behind the scenes--and not historical.

It's a french cartoon and there's a good english dub on VRV (and bad pirate english subs floating around if you know where to look for). It's a prequel to a french comics so it's rather short (26 eps of 12 minutes); auto-contained, you can totally watch it without reading the comics; in fact I do not recommad the comics at all.

For Android I use ColorNote. There's no limit to how much you can write, you can title and colourcode 'notes' and you can even use it to make personallised alarms messages in the status bar.

I literally have written entire first drafts in colornotes. Particularly on nights where an idea for a short fic wouldn't let me sleep until I wrote all of it.

Edit:It works perfectly fine offline too.

I’ve been using Microsoft Works for so long that it feels just plain weird to use anything else. I use that for all my drafts and the switch to Scrivener for editing.

Oddly, Google Docs has been my go-to lately. It's basic as all get out, but I work well with it - maybe others will too.

i used to use zen writer on pc a lot bc i would have fun choosing a background haha. and the way it fullscreens made it harder to just click away on a whim to another tab full of distractions.

then i was out of a laptop for a bit and ended up using my tablet for everything. i was looking for a writing app i could change the background in like zen writer. idk. having that visual cue helped my brain focus on different projects, and i'm just into tha aesthetic~ haha. but i found pure writer and i loved it so much i paid for the premium version and even got the desktop app so i can use my laptop keyboard (which is just more comfortable that the tiny bluetooth tablet keyboard i was using) but still organize everything in that app.

I write in ZenWriter and organize everything in Scrivener. Before I got Scrivener last year, I used Word/Libre Office to put chapters together and the website Hiveword to organize stuff.

Scrivener is great! And also kind of pricey if you don't have the discount for winning Nanowrimo. I'm glad I finally got it, but I'd definitely check out some videos about it first before buying it to make sure you really want it and/or try a trial version of it.

Hiveword does a lot of the same organizational stuff Scrivener does, but in slightly different ways I kind of prefer, honestly. The only thing is it's meta organization only, so you can't use it to actually write with, and also it is online only.

I've used ZenWriter for almost ten years and I love it, but I wouldn't actually recommend it anymore unless you can find an older version, primarily because of how the current version handles saving your work (unless it's changed since I emailed the guy to ask about it, but it's hard to find information on it too so :P ).

This is definitely a cool list, i may check out some of these!

I currently use WPS office. I have the options of writing as a .doc or .txt, and I enjoy their mobile view (you get used to it) to read pdf fics, and that I can place it on nightmode and also change the background colors when I feel like it. There are other features, but they are paid features, so eh.

Anyone else have Firefox browser totally go bonkers today re: Twitter? I had to switch to Chrome to be able to see any pictures, make any tweets, or see any of the sidebar (Home, Explore, Notifications, etc.).
