People are still talking about Tiger King?

Sorry wrong secret! This is me just unable to log in on mobile.

I mean, it was the most popular/talked about show in april of this year. Personally I'm more concerned about people still talking about HP/Supernatural/Sherlock or whatever.

I feel like it was March when I watched it but either way it feels like 20 years ago. I don't care if people still talk about their old long-running fandoms I just feel like this show/person had their 15 minutes and that's all it is. /shrug.

In 7th grade, we were reading a certain dystopia novel where undesirables are “released to elsewhere.” In discussion, I mentioned how they were killing people, and the teacher pulled me aside because I wasn’t supposed to figure that out yet. I think a lot of kids just miss what would be obvious to adults. If you happen to be slightly more . . . Mature? Experienced? I’m not sure what the word is here. Anyway, you’ll catch things.

I think the same could be said for most adults. I'm sure there's some statistics out there about what reading level the general population tends to be at, but... I suspect it's embarrassingly low. There's a reason why manuals and articles have to be written at a fifth grade level for adults. So if there's an unpleasant aspect to the documentary, it might be going waaaaaaay over peoples' heads or they're not really picking up on the finer points with casual viewing.

They left a lot of it out of the show. There were *many* things they left out of the show that aired. It has nothing to do with reading comprehension levels when things were being deliberately obscured or cut.

...your teacher sounds like a shitty one.

Oh, man. 84 Charing Cross Road. Haven't thought about that movie in years. I was weirdly fond of it as a kid.

I guessed the ending of Sixth Sense like 20, 30 minutes in, and my friends who had seen it already were pissed at me for figuring it out when they hadn't. Honestly, most movies (etc.) follow predictable beats and plot points. Tropes are tropes for a reason. They're comforting and expected. It's why people often get mad or disappointed when there's a truly unexpected subversion to that. I don't mean a twist - those can be good or bad, and are indeed a trope themselves. I mean, things like "the bad guys win and the good guys die" or "the couple doesn't end up together." Those type of movies can be good, but I think it's rare that the majority of the audience fully enjoys them, because they don't follow the scripts (if you will) that viewers pick up on even subconsciously. Just because you might be better at that than others doesn't mean you're TOO focused. It just means...you pay attention and recognize patterns.

Some people are really good at figuring this stuff out! My girlfriend can solve the mystery in most TV shows or movies extremely quickly, while I'm still going "huh?" And we imbibe a similar amount of media, so I don't think it's just how much you watch but an ability to read the genre.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-01 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Being good at picking up on storytelling tropes doesn't necessarily mean that you spend too much time on it, and it isn't abnormal to be able to spot those patterns if that's an aspect of media that you enjoy. It just sounds like those particular classmates are the sort of audience that doesn't put a lot of consideration of the stories they consume at the more meta level. And that's ok too - not everyone gets the same things out of the movies and books that they consume.

You're good at pattern-spotting and deduction, OP - you're fine!
No need to worry.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-01 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the issue is more that you were speaking up inappropriately while other people were trying to sit and enjoy the film. I've leaned over and whispered stuff jokingly to a friend, but that was during a movie we both didn't take super seriously. Sometimes being socially aware goes a long way.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-01 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's common for there to be discussions about the material when you're watching something for a class. I never get why people are so quick to assume OP must be doing something crappy and inappropriate when there's no indication that this is the case.

Our classes were only 55 minutes long so we had to watch movies over 2 or 3 of them. The conversation took place while we were leaving the classroom after the first viewing, so this was not it.

some of it is definitely story-telling tropes and some of it is luck and some of it is you picking up deliberate foreshadowing and some of it is less trope and more that you get the reference. unless you're pretending your life is media, you're fine.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-01 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I do it all the time- drives my husband bonkers. But I don't think it necessarily means overconsumption, even if you probably need to consume enough media to learn tropes and plot themes. But rather that you have to have an analytical mind and are good at picking out the clues and themes. Don't worry!
