It's kind of depressing to me how many people are so willing and eager to become internet flying monkeys for just... random folks. No offense to your mutual, but I can't imagine loving an author soooooo much I'm going to bully people they don't like just so I can feel like we're besties or something. It seems incredibly pathetic.

This doesn't exactly make it better, but at least some of those fans aren't so loopy for the author that they'll bully people against their own better inclinations. Instead, they're people who really want to bully someone, and who are happy to jump on a perceived insult to their fave author as a convenient excuse for doing what they wanted to do all along.
