Personally speaking, I expected it because the books harp on (and on) about Sirius looking like shit, but still looking like someone who used to be hot. The flash back in OOTP states he's gorgeous enough to have girls staring at him. Also, his brother's looks are described as "less handsome as ..."
I liked Oldman just fine as Sirius, but not good-looking enough to live up to the "hype"

Lupin, I don't know, maybe because he was such a cool character, and cool = pretty for a lot of people?
