whew i love a petty secret.

Wow, I didn't interpret that as petty at all! More heartfelt, if anything

You know I don't find think heartfelt is an antithesis to petty. there can be a both situation going on. regardless, i feel that wishing your estranged brother regretted his decision every time he sees a certain book is pretty petty.

Really? Not trying to start anything just, this mostly came across as sad to me.

I think the disconnect is that I don't think of petty as disparate from most any other emotion. but i do think it's a moment of smallness to wish regret on people who have done what they think is best for themselves, when the motivator for that wish is that they have done something you didn't want them to do or think they should do. it doesn't help imo that estrangement is usually b/c of mental health issues or genuinely toxic dynamics. OP doesn't care if it actually did improve her brother's life, they just want him to feel like he shouldn't have done it for a bit. i think it's small.

Completely fail to understand how anyone could come to that conclusion, unless you assume OP is the villain of the piece.

...I don't really think of people as villains. petty is just an emotional response, you don't have to catastrophize it. it's a moment of smallness. you've felt petty before i'm sure and it didn't make you a villain just momentarily self-interested.

but frankly, I think it's small to wish regret on a person for an action they took for their good but which you don't like.

Ha ha, yeah, OP's family fell apart. It sure is petty for them to think about that and hope their brother misses them.

Seriously, have you ever considered not advertising what a horrible person you are? It would probably make your life easier and all it requires is a small amount of self control.

this is actually a good example of the projection likely going on in OP's post. a person hoping another feels a negative feeling based upon nothing but their own feelings regardless of (or projecting onto) the actual circumstances of the person they're wising on. it's a moment of smallness. thanks for a corresponding example, nonny.
