Because heroines with "wild, unmanageable curls" are a staple. I don't have a problem with that per se – I actually like it, in a wish fulfillment way – but one, it's usually written as a lazy "she thought she was ugly but really she was beautiful", and two, I have flat, wispy hair, no volume at all, and I would like to see a heroine like me.

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense and it would be nice to have more variety in hair types for characters.

Ah yes, "wild unmanageable curls" ...would it that they actually mean that, that they meant natural hair/afro, when in fact they mean the loose kind of curl that looks "sexy" but not too much - doesn't make her "intimidating". UGH.

It's funny when you begin to realize that the descriptor of "wild, unmanageable curls" has different meanings to different folks.

(OP) And this is why it's a secret. I like that the wild, unmanageable curls give black people an in for representation, even if it is usually not what the author intended.

I too have flat, baby fine hair. It's not even thin; hair stylists constantly tell me there's a lot of it. But it's so fine that it still looks like there's barely any, and the only way I can get ANY volume at all is with a TON of backcombing and hairspray. So I feel your pain, OP.

Following fiction writers' tendency to make a woman's hair broadly representative of her character, my character would be uninteresting and lifeless. :/

Most people with wild unimaginable curls will tell you - they're a pain in the fecking arse. My hair could be described like this bur not charitably and I can't do a thing with it. Maybe one day a year the heavens will align and my hair will look good. The rest I just look mad.

Same feelings anon. The reason I straightened the fuck out of my hair in my teens is because my curly/wavy thick hair could at best be described as “birds nest” - a primary school teacher even gave me a complex over it as she demanded my “messy” hair be tied up and she forced me to do it with a ratty piece of string. The girls in my class who had straight hair or styled ringlets we’re allowed to have their hair flowing free for some reason...

Anyway years of straightening has left my hair not as wavy, which I was sad about until lockdown where it’s started to come back due to the fact I can’t be bothered to style my hair every day. I’m actually learning to love my messy hair but that might be because I’m in my 30s and no longer give a shit what people think. Hell will still freeze over when my hair looks naturally tidy though!

Wow your teacher was a piece of work! D:

Haha i'm in my thirties now too and don't care either. Too much work to style it!
