I haven't read the novel, but I've watched the donghua, and the characters didn't have any chemistry in that one. But the live action version is another thing. The actors have great chemistry in my opinion. Which, boy, it took me ages to finally give a chance. I've only watched it because a mutual kept posting behind the scenes clips, and the two leads were surprisingly adorable. It hasn't turned me into a fan, exactly, but I like it enough to read fic sometimes.

Seconding what a difference the live action makes. Both the cast and crew put a lot of work into making the relationship clear despite the censorship.
