I highly doubt an animated adaptation would ever work.

I've been a fan of Cats (via the 90s recording; I've seen it live twice tho) since I was a kid, and I'll be the first to admit that Cats is a STRANGE show. Mostly that's because they were restricted to only poems that original author (his name escapes me right now for some reason) wrote, hence the short and repetitive lyrics for a couple of songs and the almost complete lack of a plot... but regardless, 'Cats' as it is is just an excuse to put on a show and have fun with some quirky characters. Forcing it into a different environment, where they would have no choice but to add lots of dialogue and tell a more concrete story, would just ruin it.

I haven't had the courage to seek out the recent live-action film (I knew from their choice of cast they had fundamentally misunderstood SO many characters), but I think its poor reception sort of proves my point.
