101. Considering that people like Bella are usually the ones who wind up miserable in real life? I don't think you'll have a problem.

I wish characters like Edward would incite the same rage in most people that characters like Bella do, though. Creepy ideas of masculinity are as much part and parcel of sexism, and damage women (and men), as much as gross ideas of femininity do.

That's Omar Little from the Wire (played by Michael K. Williams). He is pure awesome (and, incidentally, also a favorite character of Barack Obama, because Mister President-elect has taste).

101 - For what it's worth, I think characters like Edward are creepy and create bizarre and unrealistic expectations of masculinity? That kind of thing is pretty much one step down from the Conan the Barbarian-style concept of masculinity in my book.

Yeah, I do find it encouraging that a lot of Twilight lolfans and haters find Edward horrifying. So it's not everyone who gives the guys a free pass while obsessing over whether or not the girls meet their standards.

I actually find Edward more irritating than Bella. I mean, the guy reads the minds of all of the people around her so he always knows what she's doing and watches in her sleep. He's trying to seem less like a monster by protecting people, but instead of doing something to help humanity, he finds the weakest girl he can find and becomes her knight-in-shining-armor while telling her she'd be dead without him, just to feed his own ego. He orders her around all of the time. His body feels like a corpse. He talks about how "hot" he is all the damn time (Bella does this as well, which irritates me). And I've only read half of the book!

I tried telling this to a Twilight fan, and she just said, "He's just protective!" Um, that's not protective, that's creepy. I know other Twilight fans who agree Edward's creepy, but still think the book's interesting, so that's a little reassuring (I think).

Bella could be an interesting character. I'd be interested in seeing a character who's naturally weak, but trying to get over it. The main problem with Bella is not that she's weak, I feel, but that her weakness is portrayed as a positive trait, not a negative one. I think many series have done the weak-girl-trying-to-be-strong thing very well (Sailor Moon, for example), and I think if Stephanie Meyer wanted a klutzy girl as her lead, she should have gone with that idea instead of this outdated idea of femininity.
