By that I mean feminists that go way over the top, constantly insisting that every woman should have no signs of weakness at all, contact with men should be scolded blahblahblah

I wasn't saying that all strong women in fiction are like that, I was just using it as an example on how it always seems to be either one extreme or the other.

Because there are so many of those in fiction (or reality) and they're always held up to be strong and wonderful!

Well the point I'm trying (and failing, apparently) to get at is that I don't think every female character needs to be written as What A Woman Should Be, they should be just written as human beings.

I wish you'd said this from the start because WORD.

yes I am just not the most articulate person in the world :B

Re: 101

I get that. And thanks for explaining.

Some good catch-all phrases for the future are "one-dimensional characters" or "one note characters" or simply "stereotypes". That covers everything from cookie-baking mom who lives to serve to evil feminist who is only angry because she's not pretty.

Re: 101

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll drink to that.

Indeed.

Who are these feminists? Seriously, I'd love the names of characters who act like this.

Re: 101

(Anonymous) 2008-12-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Those mentally cloistered twatwaffles who think having a door held open for them is a purposefully malicious sign of oppression. And other self-victimizing bullshit.

Re: 101

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh right okay. I forgot how many of those are female protagonists in fiction who are lauded as feminist heroes by the rest of the world.

o_O

What an angry individual you are.

Re: 101

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
We call those "straw feminists," anon. Because while they do exist in real life, there are a whole lot more of them in fiction, usually held up as an example of why feminism is uncool and makes women unattractive.

ILU IN A NON-STRAW FEMINIST WAY.

Thank you.

Feminist myths used to discount the ideals of feminism for the lose.

Yes. As in, a certain kind of feminist, as evidenced by the adjective modifying the noun.

Re: 101

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you mean that kind that everybody chooses to dwell on despite their being a slim minority who are mostly mocked by the rest of the feminist community? Ok.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I just wish people would stop trying to write women as damsels or militiant feminists.

What about this statement infers that all feminists are militant feminists? It's a truth that they exist, so what's wrong with acknowledging that? Obviously "damsels" is a stereotype as well, so the point being made is that there's two radical stereotypes of women that get retreaded over and over.

Also, you try too fucking hard.
