101. Note that not ALL feminists are like that. In fact, I've known several that are reluctant to say they're feminists since they think they'll be branded as these.

Maybe you could've typed "feminist carticature" or "feminist stereotype", to make clear that real-life feminism isn't that way?

I thought that was what she meant by "militant feminist" -- unless "militant" is supposed to be a positive trait or something.

"Militant" would only mean that they stick strictly and unwaveringly to the ideals of feminism (the real ideals, not the man-hating ones people make up in order to discredit feminism), which there would be nothing wrong with.

I don't think having a combative attitude is conducive to establishing gender equality, rather it makes people go on the defensive and is counter productive. Also, militant feminism has been shown to either not have much of an effect or cause a backlash effect. ()

Yeah, you forgot:

2 : aggressively active (as in a cause)

Which is how I always interpret the phrase "militant _____" when it's used. As in, a militant cook is someone who's very strict about cooking, and a militant feminist who's very strict about feminism, not necessarily engaged in feminism warfare or throwing pulled-out chairs in men's faces (which is a huge exaggeration of a small minority ANYway).

When I hear the word the first connotation I get is negative, that's all. It doesn't help that the BBC calls terrorists "militants," so it gets used a lot in a negative sense. I'm sure that's what the original poster meant. But god forbid that we say anything negative about feminism.

Personally, no "ism" should escape criticism. Or else it would be completely dead as a movement.

Yeah, if everyone agreed with the ideals of feminism, then we wouldn't need it and it would be dead. :P Sign me up for that world!
