I'm sorry, but people are not obligated to write only things that will give your twelve year old cousins the right ideas about how to handle their lives.

That would be...THEIR PARENTS' job.

And yours, if you choose to accept it.

I like Twilight, and if we get rid of every book that might make someone with insufficient guidance get the occasional wrong idea about life, we're not going to be left with a lot to read. It's actually kind of an interesting world, frankly, and I'm not about to give it up FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHYLLDRUN.

Besides, your twelve year old cousins are twelve. When they have boyfriends (or girlfriends) of their own, they'll discover for themselves that it's nice to have your own priorities, particularly if the REAL PEOPLE in their lives are supportive. I don't think your twelve year old cousins wanting to be Bella Swan has any bearing on what they will really do with their lives any more than my wanting to be Princess Leia when I was 12 did. I mean, realistically? Not a lot of job openings for smart mouthed royalty.

People who actually have lives don't give them up so easily. The task of parents and older relatives is to ensure that the kids get lives. If you have your own life, silly fantasy is still enjoyable, and when you say, "I wish..." you don't really mean it.

I mean honestly, I bitch that ten years of working in healthcare has yet to provide me with a Carlisle or even a Chase, but in reality I enjoy what I do with my own time so much that I hardly think about dating.

Er, ok.

I didn't say that my cousin wants to be Bella Swan. I'm saying she thinks it's romantic for boys to cut your brake cables to keep you from seeing your male friends BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU SO MUCH. And, sorry, but that bothers me. It bothers her parents too.

There may not be a lot of job openings for smart mouthed royalty, but at least Leia never spent an entire film prepping to kill herself because Han left her.

It's actually kind of an interesting world, frankly, and I'm not about to give it up FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHYLLDRUN.

No one said you had to. As for the children, I know plenty of 25-year-old women who find Edward Cullen creeping around their bedrooms uninvited romantic too.

No book is going to give guidance that is relevant and correct for everyone, but, sorry again, the message that Twilight imbues about romance is just plain crap: that girls are delicate creatures who can't walk two steps without tripping/nearly getting raped and so they need a boyfriend around to protect them. And if that boyfriend dismantles your car or is emotionally manipulative, it's ok because he's only trying to protect you. And because he's really, really hot.

I'm glad you're intelligent enough to be able to distinguish between reality and fantasy, but I know plenty of girls (and Twilight fans) who aren't. Maybe you have such a good head on your shoulders because of the sort of rolemodels you had as a child. Like a certain asskicking, smart mouthed royal who cared about others and fought for what she believed in and coped with a loss more devastating than Luke could've ever handled with her chin up. : )

It should bother you if your cousin thinks boys cut your brake lines because they love you. It should bother you if you are dating anyone who does these things who is not a vampire.

I certainly do not believe I have a good head on my shoulders because I watched Star Wars instead of reading Twilight when I was 13. Because I can distinguish between reality and fantasy, and I knew EVEN THEN that Star Wars wasn't real. (I also wanted to be Telzey Amberdon when I was 10, who is perhaps less of a feminist icon, and Penelope Pitstop when I was 6, who is actually a damsel in distress--but at 6 I seem to have somehow not noticed that, and was appalled when I watched the show at 40 odd years--not "omg they let kids watch this" appalled but "omg this is so not what I remember" appalled.)

I have a good head on my shoulders because I noticed at the age of seven that my mother was a miserable, unhappy person and I was going to do whatever it took NOT to become her.

Unfortunately most people don't seem to pick up on these things. I haven't noticed that whether or not they read escapist literature makes an appreciable difference; what I have noticed is that what makes an appreciable difference is for a REAL person to tell them that something is wrong and that they deserve better. I was very lucky in my teachers being supportive. Even then I could have done with more guidance. I could have used someone around in my life to tell me about actual career paths I might like, because I arrived in adulthood with actually no real practical ideas of what it was going to be like :)
