I think catatonia is just a lazy way to show how in lurve ppl are and can only work if the relationship itself is shown (rather than told) as being just that powerful. There's nothing wrong with being in deeply in love with somebody else. It's just...how it's represented that can send horrible messages and because of that, people start having such a strongly negative reaction to it that they start seeing any case of a girl being deeply in love with a guy as somehow misogynistic >_>

Beware the madly twitchy and overly personal response.

That book made me actively nauseous for that exact reason. It is the first book in ages that I had to force myself to finish and walked away from absolutely sickened by the crushing depression of the ending.

(I'm referring to Wicked here, not Twilight. Firstly, it was an adulterous relationship, which bothers me on both sides. Secondly, the author took a woman who was fighting for what she believed in and instead made her a mentally and emotionally unstable creature who couldn't even acknowledge or treat her own son like a human being in the aftermath.)

I have deeply personal reasons for being completely turned off, disappointed and disgusted with people who decide to write stories where 'ZOMG, I can't live without you, and to prove it, I'm going to have a breakdown, expect everyone else to clean up my messes, act like a martyr and NEVER BE WHOLE AGAIN!!!'

Yeah, it's a natural, internal reaction and part of the grieving process, but it sure as hell isn't romantic and carrying on in that fashion does nothing for the deceased (who is probably rolling over in their grave in revolted embarrassment).

None of the unfortunately large circle of widows that I know have spent the rest of their lives wandering around in a self-indulgent, self-destructive, martyr-like daze. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm saying it's painful to see representations of it in fiction held up as 'romantic' and 'oh my god, see how much she loved him'.

Because, of course, the best monument to someone who loved you is to let the world know that you are a delicate snowflake who always needs to be center of attention, because you're the ONLY person to ever suffer a tragedy and no one can possibly understand how you suffer. That'll really help.

This is twice as embarrassing when (in Twilight's case) the poor object of affection is still alive and around. An ex pulled that one on someone I care about deeply, and it's almost as bad as declaring that they're going to die/commit suicide without the object of their affection. 'Oh my god, you caused me to have a breakdown. Your inability to acknowledge my love has ruined me.' It's a creepy, creepy 'get psychological help NOW' thing.

... yeah, I have a lot of personal issues with the writing of one person of either gender being totally, emotionally dependent on another. It's not romantic, it's a sign of someone who is making the other person in the relationship shoulder 100% of the responsibility for their partner's mental and emotional well-being and it's both unhealthy and precludes any sort of equality or give-and-take in the relationship. It's controlling, it's mildly abusive and it makes the other person do all the damn work.

Finding it in real life makes me avoid that person from there on out. Finding it in fiction makes me abandon the book instantly. I've seen too much of it in real life.

No I agree, I completely agree. The whole thing is just sickening. It's akin to taking somebody hostage and denying them the right to live without said 'verging on a mental breakdown' ex-bf/gf. It's just sad when people try to paint this crap as true love. It's even sadder when less experienced people believe it.
