101. Because (after gaining so many rights) we still have a very skewed idea of what makes for masculinity or femininity. *sigh* The problem is that characters like Bella are a symptom, not a cause. We see them, and it's really easy to think that they're teaching people that it's okay to be that way. But if the stereotype weren't already considered acceptable and desirable, then Bella would have never passed muster. The stereotype is made strong because society views it as a positive, but it also makes that view stronger too. Vicious cycle, and you can't break it by going after Bella. Lots of small fry are always harder and more ineffective to battle than the giant stationary target that is popular opinion.

One of my favorite (current, because I collect favorites like pockets collect lint) heroines is Maya from Serpent's Shadow (by Mercedes Lackey, part of her Elemental Mages series). She's a suffragist, a female doctor and she fights for what she wants and believes in. Of course, she ends up being the Damsel simply by virtue of it being based vaguely off of Snow White (I think), and since Maya is Snow White she ends up in trouble. But she fights the whole way. She rocks.

In general, I think Mercedes Lackey wins for female characters. :x Which is a nice way to off-set Anne McCaffrey's fail. *sigh*

106. Hm. What was that one secret? "My care is not a zero-sum game"? I can do lots of things and still have plenty of time for fandom. This is how I relax, and if I didn't take time to relax then I'd be less capable of doing other things. Got it memorized?

108. Not a crime. (pets)

111. LOL And probably be told "OMG THAT'S SO OOC!"

113. Gods, he's pretty. Just... INSANELY PRETTY.

117. .... ._. Okay, you had me as semi-understanding until that last bit. I think your priorities are skewed.

118. OMG I LOVE THOSE BOOKS. AND I DID NOT KNOW SHE WROTE GENDERBENDER SLASH OMG OMG OMG *SQUEEEEE*

119. Um. Sleeping Beauty makes perfect sense? o.O I haven't seen Land Before Time in fifteen years, so I'd have to get back to you there, but...

Well, I guess your tastes have changed?

120. (pats) If you say so.

121. WIN. XD Though again, honesty. Best policy. &c.

124. I always wonder about people who let others ruin something for them. It just seems like a silly reason to decide your action and/or tastes.

131. CAPTION WIN. Besides, I read the long ones if they look interesting. So :P I am no one.

In general, I think Mercedes Lackey wins for female characters.

What Lackey can't do with story telling, she does with characterization. I'm not always a huge fan of her actual writing, but her characters always keep me engaged.

With the exception of Myste. Myste smacks of Mary Sue-dom.

Which is a nice way to off-set Anne McCaffrey's fail. *sigh*

Oh Annie Mac. I love the Dragonriders to death, but yeah. Just... yeah.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Myste is something of a Mary Sue, isn't she? :\ But at least she's more of a realist-Sue than a fantasy-Sue. Except for the getting of the hot foreign and grizzled Alberich, which was 100% Sue-dom.

OMG. McCaffrey. I'm a third-generation Pernese (my grandmother started it I had no choice I SWEAR), but what she does to her characters makes my jaw hurt from grinding my teeth. "OHAI, you are awesome! WE CAN'T HAVE THAT. [stabby]"

WHY ANNE WHY? (quietly rewrites Pern Word Of God rules to accommodate herself)

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I could have handled Myste's Mary Sue-ness if she weren't so blatant about. "Oh hey, so here's this character who has my name and looks like me and her flaw is that she can't be taught how to defend herself but she's totally not me. Totally. Oh yeah, she gets to sleep with Alberich. But she's still not me." Yeah.

Yeah, I understand your Annie Mac frustrations. Those books will always be among my favorites, because they were the reason I got into fantasy in the first place. I read them in like, third grade.

I won't even touch the ones her son wrote. They're godawful.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. :\ But for a woman with a zillion other non-Sue books, a single character who wasn't the lead player I suppose is the lesser of possible evils. (I loved the first several Anita Blake books, but LKH never even tried to hide it.)

Anne. Anne Anne Anne. ;-; My grandmother used to read the Pern books to me when I was a baby. My mother and I were insane collectors. *sigh* It hurts horribly to know what she did there.

Neither will I. ._. I don't know why he tried. Maybe because it's a profitable franchise? :x

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
LKH... oi. Yeah, agree on that point.

I feel bad for post!SoP Pern. I feel even worse for Todd!Pern. Its like, she wanted to give her universe over to someone who would do it right. Well, too bad she never realized that just because he's her son doesn't mean he'll do it right.
