Yeah, it was practically guro at the start; every day it shocks me that it's somehow become an intensely popular series for quite young fans. Admittedly I don't know if it's sanitized some of the gore out since then, but its origins are incredibly mature.

The gore without the emotional weight because it's limited by shounen storytelling makes it feel so much more gratuitous. Guro is as good as any word to describe it, I suppose, except for middle school kids.
