SPOILERS FOR WATAMOTE

I read the manga consistently. I have great news about what happens MUCH later on. Will create spaces to even it out...












The protagonist, after everything that happens, goes on a trip with a handful of other girls merely because she was coupled with them. What was at first vitriolic companions or acquaintances, little by little, they actually became close friends. Not only the teacher, but the rest of the students now treat Tomoko as a very beloved friend. She even has someone with a crush on her! But that's a very different, weird story full of insanity and obsession.

Perhaps the chapter that made me realize how much Tomoko's life changed for the better was the graduation festival, which was in sort a bookend for the first culture festival at the end of the first season. In this one, you can see Tomoko actually did it, without realizing it: She became popular and beloved by her friends. They wanted to be with her, know where she was.

The saddest moment, however, was that Tomoko only learned, all too late, who was the person in that bear outfit that hugged her during that festival. She realized she never got the chance to thank her for how much that gesture meant to her. Tomoko cries with this realization -- but she is comforted by the new friends she got to make, in a bittersweet ending.

It reflects my own life, as well. I don't read Watamote nowadays, but it made me happy to see that reminder: That it gets better.

Not OP, but now I want to read the manga. That sounds like a nice turn of events.

Funnily enough, at that stage in the manga, the humor comes not merely at Tomoko's expense, but for how insane Tomoko's friends are or have become after befriending her!
