This. The first book would make an amazing movie. Even when I first read it as a teen, long before I understood how films worked, I thought how cool this would be as a movie.

I'm usually all for film adaptations being their own thing, matching the story to the medium, necessary changes yadda yadda, but in this case, the book is already written like a movie. Too many changes will make it worse, especially if you're trying to make a kids movie when the story isn't really a children's book.
