The thing is, I usually like the bickering couple. But with them, all I ever saw was that they consistantly brought out the worst in each other. Han and Leia are on of my all time favourite couples, but for some reason, their bickering never struck me as so hurtful and mean-spirited as R/Hr's. It always left a bad taste in my mouth, even knowing what she was going for.

It doesn't help that I really dislike Hermione and think she's an incredibly immature person emotionally. I can't see her finally growing the heck up with Ron (by "growing up" I mean that she stops doing whatever the heck she wants, regardless of other people's thoughts and feelings, because she's so bloody certain she's Right).

It was believably developed, but to me, it's not believeable at all that they had anything approaching a healthy relationship.

Harry and Ginny felt reasonable to me. She was, sort of, a "girl next door" figure, that he was always aware of, and knew for a long time before he finally realised that he was attracted to her. I don't really care, but it didn't throw me off my game (They're more neutral, while R/Hr were just so darn negative).

Since I wasn't very interested in the Ron/Hermione relationship, I didn't pay that much attention to their bickering. It wasn't hurtful or mean-spirited as far as I could tell. For me they were more neutral. I think it's because Harry was the character I liked best in the books, and paid the most attention to.

It doesn't help that I really dislike Hermione and think she's an incredibly immature person emotionally.

That might be because they're all teenagers, you know. At that age, you're always certain you're right about everything.

I mean, we can't expect them to behave like they're in their thirties, after all.

Harry and Ginny felt reasonable to me. She was, sort of, a "girl next door" figure, that he was always aware of, and knew for a long time before he finally realised that he was attracted to her.

Since they never interacted until they got together, it felt incredibly disjointed to me. I mean, he's the main character. A little development would have been nice. As it was, it read as if he suddenly realised she was hot, and nothing else. Do you realise that they don't actually have any conversations at all in HBP? And the only time they talk in OotP is when Ginny chews him out for not asking her about what being possessed by Voldemort was like (though Voldemort actually was infiltrating his brain, but in a different way than he did with Ginny; that whole thing was just confusing).

There's nothing inherently wrong with the pairing itself (except that it's boring), but it was badly written and developed. As was Ginny's character, sadly; she seemed to be a different person in the first four books.

Yes, but you don't generally disfigure people for life because You Know Better. Or attempt to trick people into unemployment For Their Own Good. Or blackmail someone. Or the myriad of times Hermione has used people. It gets glossed over, because mostly, it's mean or bad people she does this to, but looked at from a neutral point of view, it's terrifying and not a little bit ruthless.

The thing is, I don't see Hermione growing, because she has never admitted that she was wrong on most of these actions. Heck, Snape kills Dumbledore, and in that aftermath, the girl says, albiet sadly, "Well, I was right about the book." It's not just her actions that scare me--it's the fact that she never seems to think, in retrospect, that they were wrong.

Well, to be fair, I think every single romance was handled like crap in the books. Tonks/Lupin, anyone? I agree that wer get virtually no interaction with Ginny and Harry...my guess is that we're supposed to assume that they must have hung out a bit while Harry crashed at the Weasley's for summer and all. It's sloppy writing at best, but like you said, there's nothing inherently wrong with the pairing. I really didn't care either way who Harry got with, and the monster in his chest was headdeskingly hilarious, but their relationship never really rubbed me the wrong way. I can see why it would others, though.

Yes, but you don't generally disfigure people for life because You Know Better. Or attempt to trick people into unemployment For Their Own Good. Or blackmail someone.

Many teenagers think in extremes, and would most definitely do things like this. I think that the main problem that may arise with her character is if you think she's supposed to be viewed as a role-model, and that everything she does is something you should approve of. Since I don't think this is the case, I had no real trouble with her; when I thought she was wrong, I didn't feel as if I was reading against the text.

Many people feel the same about Harry - while I see him as a well-rounded character with flaws as well as good points, other people think we have to see him as always being in the right since he's the main character. I think they're wrong, of course, and that they're railing against a textual message that isn't even there.

But back to Hermione; I didn't like her that much either, since I usually don't care much for characters like that. I did feel that her being a bit of a know-it-all was written as a flaw when she doesn't keep it under control. The problem is also that we don't know what she thinks most of the time, since the books are told from Harry's POV, and we're only told how he sees her react.

Also, I've always wondered: why does everyone assume that Marietta was disfigured for life? it doesn't say she was in canon, you know.

Well, to be fair, I think every single romance was handled like crap in the books. Tonks/Lupin, anyone?

It was sudden, but they were also minor characters. It still should have been done better, but I'm more forgiving of glossing over the lives of characters that are less important. The main character should at least be written believably.

And I think the failed attempt at a relationship between Harry and Cho was written really well; it was exactly like most romances play out at that age. It rang very true. Too bad she didn't succeed with the relationship that was supposed to be the "real" one...
