I didn't figure out why it was marketed as a romance for a long, long time. So whenever my teacher spoke of it as a romance, I was sitting there in utter horror wondering if I'd read the same book as everyone else.

Exactly. I think one of the reasons I hated the book when I read it was that I'd only heard it spoken of as a romance and so I tried to read it from that perspective and...was appalled. Finding out about the mislabelling has helped me to come to terms with Heathcliff's existence, at least. :)
