And that's totally your call! I enjoy reading WIPs and I enjoy posting them so it's nice that fandom can work for all sorts, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I do all of the thing in this secret but I don't 'mind' or judge that others do it differently. That's what marked for later/bookmarks and any other tool is for, using fandom how it suits. I dont read WIP because I don't want to be left high and dry. But all fic was a wip once,I'm happy to wait!

AYRT

tbh I wasn't meaning to sound sarcastic in my original comment but now realize I come across that way. Yes, people who judge are super aggravating but ngl I don't really care what other people do unless they take issue with what I do!

I like reading WIP because I enjoy being able to stop before a story is done and really think about and immerse myself in the possibilities of the fic and where it could go. There's a few fic where I know the endings to, due to the reviews, but refuse to actually read the whole way through because I enjoy the mental freedom of leaving it 'unfinished' and getting to explore that fic world in my own imagination.

In case you didn’t intend it, your reply is super pissy. Do you feel better replying to it? Or secretly grumpy?

THis is me. Absolutely me. Maybe the percentages of keep fics/delete is slightly different but this is me.
My kindle is 90% fanfic rather than 'real books', and my Ao3 'marked for later' section is entirely WIPs that I am waiting to complete before starting.
The only exception is series that are linked to episodes. I can cope with those because they are unfinished in the same way the show is. But otherwise no WIPs for me!
Anon - you are not alone!

I don't even mark WIPs. I just don't look at them. I only browse completed fics. The only WIPs I mark (in this case subscribe to on AO3) are sequels to stories I like written by authors who complete most fics.

First of all, great secret design.

Second, that sounds smart. I keep forgetting to download my favorite fics, and a few were lost to time. :(

I stopped reading WIPs yearssss ago. I can only go through so many abandoned fics or bad endings, before I gave up.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I like you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I never used to read WIPs, but about a year ago I got into a smallish fandom and I’ve been starving for content ever since. So now I read WIPs because the bitter disappointment of a fic I love being abandoned is still better than having no fic at all.

I enjoy a much higher percentage of the fics I read.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Can I say just how much I adore how you put together this secret? Like I would read this if you made it into a book, every page. (which makes no sense, but oh well;;)
This is perfectly rational and a wonderful example of taking in fics. You're staying true to what you do and what you like, and you maximize your enjoyment! That's awesome!

I've been trying to comment more myself, but I always end up giving get so anxious over being consistent and worrying about what I've said. It leads me to take a break from reading and replying to a fic, and I have such a hard time going back since the longer I take the less comfortable I am just jumping back in after 7 months like nothing happened...
It's completely unfair of me to do this to both the writer and myself, since it gives the impression I stopped liking the fic when that's completely the opposite of the truth.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I love the format too! It's like a court filing, what a creative concept!

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying you're doing it wrong, but something about your use of the word 'guarantee' to apply to completion status, combined with your rate of giving feedback (which is only 15% of the time, with actual comment rate being even lower) doesn't quite sit right with me.

That's fair.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
How you engage in fandom is up to you and it looks like you've found what works for you. I do it somewhat differently. I read WIPs, but never post them (except for a WIP amnesty thing I did once). But I do approach reading WIPs differently than completed works. I only download fics I really like and sometimes not until after I've read them a few times. I only give kudos for things I really like and only comment on ones I really, really like. I rarely give kudos for WIPs because I have done so for a couple of different ones, that after the fics were finished, I wished I could take back.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Same. At this point I won't even touch a fic that's not completed (unless it's an episodic type of thing where each chapter stands alone as its own short story) because I'm so sick and tired of getting really invested in a story that gets abandoned halfway through.

And as a writer, I won't post unfinished works for the same reason: because I don't trust myself to necessarily have the follow-through to finish something and I don't want to disappoint people by posting the start of something I'm never going to finish.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Love the format!!

I respect all you said. And i personally don't think there's a "doibg it wrong". Reading (and occasionally writing) fic is also my sole fandom participation.
I used to avoid WIP, but these days, idgaf. I do aim for 5+ chapters tho.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I really love the format of your secret, OP. I've limited myself to only posting fic that's done. I don't post it all the chapters in one go and will post a new one every day, but I will no longer post fics that aren't done because I've abandoned way too many. I do like reading fics that are WIPs, but I only read WIPs from authors that have a good track record for finishing their fics. I never save any of them though. I've just never liked a fic enough to save it.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I prefer WIP. I can decide on my own ending. I wouldn't mind if it updates, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I never post WIPs and I never read them either. Why waste time on that?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
God yes.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I had your restraint. It'd be MUCH easier to keep track of the good stuff and I'd have much less heart break too.

But some of the most evocative stuff I've ever read has come from unfinished WIPs (Before A Live Studio Audience is my white whale omg) and I appreciate having them in my life.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You've been "burned"? No, you were disappointed. Nobody burned you.

I was with you for I, II, and III, but geez. What is with the manipulative language at the end?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-13 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You're one of those people that writes for feedback, loses momentum, and then doesn't finish fics, aren't you.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-11 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I post WIPs when I know I have enough momentum to finish them. I've never abandoned a fic that I started posting yet. Likewise, I'll only read fic from authors that have demonstrated in the past that they finish their fics.
