He is???

Oh shit, was he? Damn. I had no idea.

Why? Mel Gibson (and his voice) was a sex symbol and A-list Hollywood hero for 30 years. We didn’t find out he was a dickhole until 2006. Fair play on all preceding materials.

People older than you know that he has been homophobic since the early '90s.

He's been anti-Semitic and homophobic for longer than that, it just wasn't a big deal at the time.

I think you are burying the lede with this anyway; if you want to feel guilt for liking him, hit up Wikipedia. Historical John Smith was... not great, and Disney aging up Pocahontas so they could hook her up with him is pretty weird.

Exactly what I came here to say! In hindsight the actor is probably a good match for the character, given that they're both terrible, terrible people.

I feel more guilty that he and Pocahontas were my favorite Disney couple when I was a kid. I was really skeeved out when I found out they were based on real people.

I remember getting I think the 10th anniversary DVD? And falling in love with it in a way I had never as a child. I mean, the visual choices, the maturity of the music, the bittersweet love story. I was watching it on a loop when at that exact moment in time, Gibson's drunk ass went on the infamous rant at the cops. I'm Jewish. I'm still mostly pissed off at him for going off right when I'd discovered the restored version of "If I Never Knew You", which is a masterpiece.

I honestly think Pocahontas would be having a Hercules-like resurrection right now if Gibson wasn't such a douchenozzle. I mean that scene where the two meet in the mist? I want to be talking about that ALL THE TIME. I want to discuss how Pocahontas is almost definitely the most difficult musical part of any Disney female ever and how Judy Kuhn absolutely slays it. (Seriously, try singing Let it Go and then contrast with singing Just Around the Riverbend and you will understand what real talent and technique truly is.) The aforementioned restoration of If I Never Knew You and the way it's so perfectly animated that you can see unshed tears in Pocahontas's eyes. And talking about the ending as an adult and bursting into tears realizing it's not a sad ending at all. Goddam that movie has some really good stuff.

I love your love for this movie! It was my favorite as a kid and there's plenty that is problematic about it, but it's also a beautiful movie.

Add me to the group who had no idea. Dammit. He and Pocahontas were such a ship for me as a child.

For me, it's Maverick, which I think is really the most attractive and charming he's ever been. Whenever I happen to catch that movie, I just have to pretend it's a completely different actor.
