What's left? Are there that many stories about poor people? I feel like there aren't.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They do exist. And stories about middle class people. Of course I guess there's a lot of arguing a person could do about where exactly the class boundaries fall.

I do wonder how it interacts with fantasy and science fiction stories for OP, where the economic conditions can be totally different, especially in science fiction. If they like f&sf.

A middle class person doesn't get torn up over going to a restaurant or getting a car repaired.

That's how OP defined it.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I take your point.

I imagine it's one of those restaurants without menus, or without written prices on their menus? I absolutely hate those. And maybe I wouldn't exactly be torn up with anxiety over getting a car repaired, but I'll still be fairly anxious. Maybe I'm not middle class enough?

I would say you're not, but we're not talking about real life. What sort of books or movies is OP watching that involve only people who agonize over slightly larger purchases?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
NA - Yeah, I thought the same thing. Like, in real life lower middle class people (or middle class people living beyond their means) will often feel some anxiety about an expensive repair or something.

But I feel like in fiction nearly everyone is financially comfortable, except for a few characters who are outright poor in a "three months behind on rent and dodging the landlord" kind of way.

True. I can't imagine wanting to read about bills, unless financial planning is somehow integral to the plot.

I don't see how you got that from "people who just go to restaurants...:

Many 19th century novels.
