I think people should be able to cosplay characters they don't look like too, though. This idea has the potential for putting together "Holy shit! The resemblance is uncanny!" situations that might not occur to the cosplayers. Except that if the cosplayers are into the fandom, they probably already know that they look like the character.

but...why limit yourself like that?

I've been cosplaying for 20+ years and I will never get with the idea that you have to look anything remotely like the character you're trying to cosplay before you're allowed to cosplay them. I have cosplayed Namekians and whateverthefuck Luminara Unduli is, I plan to cosplay fishmen, I have worn dresses and also three piece suits, and I'm currently working on a 7 foot tall demon. Why the fuck should I let my genetically-determined facial features, height, weight, skin tone, or natural hair color limit me from doing literally any of those??

"Looking like" the character is, for one, subjective, but for two, what I would consider "easy mode." Sure, the guy who looks sort of like Mark Hamil after he grows a beard has a much easier time cosplaying sequel-era Luke Skywalker than most, but other people who don't have that easy in can still cosplay amazing-looking Lukes by just putting in a little extra work with wig and makeup. People who have it on easy mode go one of two ways; they either thank their lucky stars and put in more effort on the rest of the costume or props to make sure everything is perfect, or they rely on their easy assets and end up looking absolutely terrible because they stopped giving a fuck as long as they were pretty/skinny/muscly/beardy enough.

But most importantly, and something that is constantly forgotten every other year on social media, is that cosplay is supposed to be a celebration of the characters and series you love, and even if you aren't perfect, you're still showing your love and reveling in your fandom love. Imperfect cosplays might not get as many photos and internet points, so if that's your idea of validation, maybe it's not satisfying if you don't get what you want. But that seems like a you problem, not a cosplay problem. Unless you're entering a competition, who the absolute fuck cares whether or not you look like Jason Momoa. If you don't want to cosplay for fun and appreciation but only want to cosplay for the likes and faves of your photoshoots, well, again, that's a you problem.

Someday we'll be able to go to cons and cosplay safely again, and when we do, I hope you break out of your mold and just do the characters you like, OP. Do whoever you love most, who makes you happy, who you can manage to put a costume together for considering your budget and skills. Don't cosplay someone you've never heard of just because some internet stranger said your nose looks like Meryl Streep's.

I don’t know. I agree with everything you say here and have cosplayed characters I very definitely do not resemble, but I still think the idea of a character resemblance cosplay suggestion website is cool. It sucks when people act like they’re limited to cosplaying characters they look like, though.

No offense but this sounds like a bad idea, encouraging average looking people who feel unsure about themselves to post pictures online and have strangers honestly judge them. It would turn cruel fast.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-14 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly. It would need some SERIOUS moderation to work.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-14 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I once had an idea like this, but more for fashion. Like, for example, if you're not very good with make-up, perhaps a stranger could tell you what colour tones would look best on you and if you'd suit a certain haircut.

I even made a Powerpoint presentation on how the site would work until my brother pointed out the obvious concerns with moderation.

They are just looking for character resemblance.
So maybe the only vote allowed can be a complex fandom>character dropdown.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-14 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I'm not in the cosplay community but I've heard it can be brutal. But maybe my perspective is just different; I don't think it should matter what you look like as long as you love it.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-13 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oof. You could start a deadpool on how quickly the trolls would destroy it.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-13 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of get it - It's awesome when you can nail the perfect cosplay to the point where you look exactly like that character.

On the other hand, I've spent the past 15 years cosplaying characters I'm not at all remotely similar too because I've those characters to much and its fun to go as my favorite characters.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
None of the characters I want to cosplay look remotely like me. I think if such a website existed, I'd get told to cosplay as Namiko Moon from that awful episode of La Rosa de Guadalupe that they did on anime.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Except that a lot of people cosplay their favorite characters or ones that have cool costumes that they admire and want to wear.

I would love to look like the spitting image of one of my favorite characters, but I don't, and I'm not going to cosplay some character in a fandom I'm not in just because I look like her.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-14 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I remember seeing a subreddit doing exactly this. Half the suggestions were some character in My Hero Academia and the other half were DC/Marvel characters, usually the same ones. Short? Same short character repeated. Dark toned Asian? That one southern Asian that exists. Black? Same black character for everyone. Blond? You guessed it, that one blond character that had a movie recently.

Unless you're one extreme or another, people will just keep recommending the thing at the top of their minds, and most people aren't in that many different fandoms. People in the same fandoms tend to gather easier too and you get what I mentioned.

Looks like there's much less MHA and MCU in there now, which is actually pretty nice. I might not agree with all the recs but I can see where people are coming from and there's variety in there. If you're interested, give it a look?

This is the kind of thing that sounds really nice and fun in theory, but is hard to know how well would go in practice... I don't think people have to resemble a character to cosplay them, anyway, but I like cosplaying characters that I think I "suit" whether or not I look much like their canon appearance. It's fun to think of embodying what would be an interpretation of that character I'd be into, so I'd be interested in cosplay recommendations based on that.
