I feel completely alone and isolated by the current manifestation of leftism. And I get angry when I realize that I'm not alone, but people are just as scared as I am of the raging mob for us to find each other and be alone together and have a voice together. It hurts so bad. I have no one to safely share my thoughts with, especially in fandom. No one.

Are you more to the right or more to the left than most?

NAYRT but from what I've observed, people on the left don't have this kind of angst. People with the equivalent feelings on the left usually respond by getting more revolutionary, I think.

People on the left don't refer to it as "leftism" either, generally speaking.

person from below

Yeah, that, too. I mean, I've known a couple actual left wing people who describe themselves as "leftists" but overall that term is way more prevalent on the right.

+1

I've never heard it in the US.

DA I am as left as you get and intimidated by the mob mindset currently on display too. I wouldn't describe it as a 'leftist' thing though. Both sides tend towards mob mentality these days.

IDK, I mean. What do you mean "as left as you get"? Because you can get pretty fucking far left.

Also a different anon, but I agree with the person right above me.

Most of the people on the left wouldn't describe what's going on as a "raging mob", but people with justifiable anger and pain who have put up with way too much bullshit for way too fucking long. The "raging mob" narrative/talking point is more of a right wing thing.

What is it exactly about the Left that you hate so much? We just want things to be better for everyone. We're not the monsters that you like to believe we are.

I feel you, to a degree. I'm pretty darn left, but if I didn't have people in real life to talk to about politics, I'd feel very isolated as well. The kind of all-or-nothing, agree completely with every issue or you're trash attitude of the vocal left on the internet is something I find deeply counterproductive and worrisome. Fortunately, it's very much not what I get from people when I talk to them in real life.

DA

This is exactly it for me too. Nobody on the same side of the political spectrum has ever agreed completely on everything. That's normal. But now if you even question someone's approach to a sentiment you agree with, you're the enemy.

I honestly believe it's mostly the structure of online / social media

I don't know if there are any political groups that I would say are consistently calm and rational online

Er. What raging mob? I went to a BLM/police brutality protest today. Some of my coworkers walked over. A lady in a straw hat and sundress used a megaphone to announce that she had water and snacks and a first aid kit for anyone who needed them. Most everyone wore masks and stayed spaced out except from people they lived with.

My neighbor biked over to keep an eye on his black adopted son since this was his first protest. There were a couple of dads carrying young kids on their shoulders. People driving by honked and waved while we marched. After the protest was over, protestors carrying signs were absolutely everywhere, walking back to their cars or houses. People were discussing which organizations to donate to and when to get tested for COVID. I have seen way worse behavior in my neighborhood, which is right next to the main drag full of bars, on most holiday weekends.

Black people deserve not to live in fear that random white people, or cops that are, on paper, supposed to protect everyone, can kill them with basically no consequences.

I’m white and the most help police have ever been is not killing my parents or dogs when I called to ask for help—they warned me to get my dogs and mom out before they came to check on my schizophrenic dad because otherwise they wouldn’t promise they wouldn’t shoot them during the welfare check.

My boss and coworkers who have gone to protests recently are all white or east Asian and nothing bad happened to them. One of my black coworkers went and got pepper sprayed in the face. A grandma at the same protest spent a week in a medical coma after being hit in the forehead by a “less lethal” projectile. If my grandma almost died at a protest I would’ve burned stuff down too. I can’t imagine being a mom and knowing the cops killed my child.

well the problem is trying to combine fandom and any type of politics i mean, you're already in a social space prone to the Borg, i don't know what you're expecting.

i find this type of comment in actual political spaces means that either your group doesn't have the praxis for the required topic and so you're all just flinging around talking points, or you're not as left as you think.

idk, maybe you could give an example
