I'm not talking protesting, I'm talking full on bloody revolution as the only answer. And yes, they refuse to vote, because "it's changing one tyrant for another regardless of side."

None of the people I know who protested with me or at different protests refuse to vote. Everyone I know is planning on voting in this election. Most people seem very clear that this election in particular, at least in the US, is super important.

Feel lucky. I've seen it a lot online, from young Americans who're whining about it. Which is why I'm venting. They're so fucking stupid. It's always, always, ALWAYS a specific subset of young Bernie-Or-Busters, and I have yet to meet one who isn't white

I've seen it a lot online, from young Americans who're whining about it.

There's actually a good chance a lot of them are bots or from another country and pretending to be American to stir things up. I know that sounds crazy/conspiracy theory-ish, but a lot of info came out during the Russia investigation that Russia specifically (as well as a couple other countries) was using those tactics to sow discord and interfere in the 2016 election, and that they were planning on doing the same thing for the 2020 one.

I don't think that sounds crazy or theoryish at all. Discord serves any foreign nation that hates the country with the discord. And like you said, the little shits tried it before.

ayrt

Oh, definitely. I just feel like to people not paying attention, it sounds a bit out there.

I can understand their point of view. If you're in a city with a Democratic mayor and the police were still out there cracking protestor heads and tear-gassing people, calls from the Democratic Party to solve the problem by voting for Democrats do ring hollow.

Some mayors/city councils are dealing with police forces that act like a combo of mercenaries and the mafia, though. There’s a lot of “you wouldn’t want to see what happens without us” vaguely threatening stuff being thrown around.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2020-06-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Then what good are they? Why are you telling people that the best way to solve the problem is to vote if the people we're voting for are not doing anything to solve the problem?

AYRT—because not every left leaning voter is laser focused on police reform or abolition, or prison/carceral state abolition? I’m not. It’s on my radar and I think a lot of police funding would be better spent on funding mental health and homeless outreach emergency response teams that aren’t part of police departments, and currently most if not all police departments are hothouses of racism fertilized with an almost complete lack of consequences or oversight.

But I also think health care and immigration policy and environmental issues are important.

I also currently have a Republican mayor who I happen to know hates Mexican immigrants and possibly Mexicans in general. He is not big on any of the issues I give a shit about, and he fucking loves the police. I would rather vote for one of his democratic opponents who I might not agree with on everything, but at least I won’t disagree with them about everything.

Same anon—also it turned out there were at least two members of my city council willing to cut massive chunks of the police budget and they literally didn’t have time to convince anyone else on the council or come up with a plan for where to redirect the money before they had to vote on the budget this week, and the mayor said he’d veto any plan that cut police funding.

The two candidates for mayor who are running against each other to replace him are Democrats who are mostly politically similar; I am probably going to vote for the Latino man who showed up to a couple of environmental justice protests I attended along with some local union members, rather than the white woman who I’ve never actually seen at a protest or in person at all.

It is possible that with more time to plan and a Democratic mayor, we might successfully divert some funding from the police to other programs that can do things like mental health and homeless outreach and wellness checks that the cops do a fucking horrible job of.

Yeah I really hate that attitude. It's so frustrating to have to read about people making all that noise only for them to literally discard one of the most directly effective tools at hand, allowing extreme political leaders they DON'T AGREE WITH come into power.
