Some do try that, and there's writers who complain that that's not enough and "doesn't tell them anything" about the fic. Some writers can get really picky about the type of feedback they want.

I personally disagree with that mindset-I'm totally fine with those kinds of comments, myself. Just that that may be one reason why some readers don't even bother to leave something that simple anymore-why do so if you know it won't be appreciated?

As a writer I do appreciate all comments, but I will admit that "I loved it!" or "This was great!" or "Awesome fic, thanks!" means only a tiny bit more to me than getting a kudos. (I do really value kudos, though, for the record.)

OTOH, "I loved X's characterization, you really nailed his [quality]!" or "I love your dialogue. I snorted out loud at the part where X happened," or quoting any one part of the fic and being like "kdskdfskjdskjn!" are all the kind of short, quick comments that do put an extra spring in my step that day.

I don't feel I'm owed any form of feedback, and I always appreciate every form of feedback. But yeah, ultra generic comments like "Good fic!" and "Nice!" are basically the same as kudos to me.

Hard same.
