[Legend of the White Snake]

Agreed, op. It was super disappointing to me and just got worse over time.

Maybe people who are used to soap operas are okay with the over-the-top evilness of the characters, but I was so, so disappointed. I wasn't expecting the most progressive writing of female characters from China, but still, this sucked.

My expectations for female characters weren't that high to begin with, but that's one area where Cdramas have been really underwhelming. I'm not a fan of the "scheming bitch who does stupid stuff" character. I don't like Bai's "patient saintly heroine who never says boo to the hero's bullshit" character, either. Both are frustrating in different ways.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Bai's inability to put a stop to bad things, or ask for help when needed. You're absolutely right...

I wish I knew what you were talking about!

In the first episode of the show, Ruyi (pictured in a crossdressing disguise) pretends to be a quack doctor giving the public bunk medical advice so that way her childhood friend Xu Xian, an actually good doctor, could debate her cures and prove that he's a good doctor in the eyes of the public. She did it so that way Xu Xian could get some customers for once, because she cares about him.

That was the first episode, and it's the first impression of her as someone who cares and is well-meaning, if not somewhat ridiculous. The first scene is perhaps the establishing moment of her character, right? Nope, she actually becomes cartoonishly evil afterwards. Screw the audience who wanted a cool, crafty female character.

ayrt

Thanks fo rresponding op! Damn! That sucks! I take it they didn't even bother to flesh her out as a villain either, cartoonishly evil and all that...what a fluke.

Thank you secret maker!
