I don't understand the point of genderbends that don't change anything about who the characters are or what happens in the story (except for the genderbends which are obviously to make a popular slash pairing het, which I understand and hate)...
But if you turn a male character female and their life is suddenly much worse and they fail where they succeeded in canon - I think you seriously need to look at yourself.

I don't understand the point of genderbends at all, but I don't see the point of changing their personality just because the gender changes, they just completely become OC's in that case.

I think changing their personality makes sense to some extent. Being a different gender places different expectations and experiences, so how they express their personality would change. Like a shy girl and a shy guy would both be shy, but what that entails is pretty different.

But that's not the character though, and there really isn't any reason for it to change their personality unless it's a period piece or there's some sort of distinct social reasoning and then that's only in treatment rather than reaction. Other than that you're interpreting a different character, which makes it an OC.

AYRT - keeping someone's personality completely the same and changing their gender only makes sense if you don't think that a person's upbringing and society influences their personality in some way.
If, however, you believe that a person's character is set in stone from the moment they emerge screaming into this world, then yes, it's totally reasonable to keep it the same.

What's the point of writing a fic about a character when you have no intention of staying true to that character. Societies reaction to them can reflect their gender, but not the way the character would canonly react to them, otherwise just read original work if all you want is stereotypes with no reflection on what you're taking from.

DA - You do you, dude. But I don't think your comments really make much sense.

Fandom has plenty of room for fics about a character who has an experience that changes them, but in a way that stays true to that character. Genderbending them is one of the ways to explore that.

IDK if it counts as "changing who the characters are" but I think changing genders can change the way that specific relationship tropes play out and it can strongly affect how the fandom sees the relationship

What if I genderbend to make it MORE gay?

AYRT - totally fine

Always acceptable. It's the same rule as it is for changing pronouns in karaoke songs (only allowed if you make it more gay).
