I genuinely don't understand why film studios keep buying the rights to books and then putting out poorly-written, terribly-cast abominations with little to no relation to the text. What's the point? They get critically panned, they don't make "real" money, they make the existing book fans angry - wouldn't it just be easier to do it right?

In some cases isn’t it to keep the copyright.

I think that only applies when they've had the rights for like a decade and still haven't done anything with them, or when another studio is kicking down the door in their eagerness to make a bid.

I assume that some % of it is that a lot of people just aren't good at making movies

Do you have any particular ones in mind?

I'm guessing they're thinking of the Artemis Fowl movie that just came out.
