It's definitely true, and what really bothers me is how much corporations are aware of it and actively exploit it (albeit only on their own terms). Plus, there's also a bunch of different really parasitic and shitty things about how nerd media works in that regard nowadays. Nerd media acting as basically PR machines for media companies on the one hand, and nerd media being strongly incentivized to cater to the worst instincts of fandom for clicks on the other. And it feels like it really diminishes the space for independent, creative fandom. The SD Comic Con-ization of fandom. I really dislike it and it tires me out about most large franchises at this point (especially Disney-owned franchises which are the absolute epitome of all of these things).
