I agree to some extent. I think a vocal performance should be interesting, but I wish people would be more... diverse in their sound? I'm tired of these wimpy, weepy, fake breathy girls (or even boys) or gospel singer clones. Give me something in between, or something different. Or give me someone who's had vocal training, or opera training. I loved voices in the 80s (one of the few things I enjoyed from the 80s).

For me, soulful cadenzas are kind of like chocolate sauce. Anyone can make a performance soulful by streeeeeeeetchiiiiiing ouuuuuuuut the phraaaaaaaaaaase. Can you deliver the same soul inside the pop song structure? Can you give me the blues in a strict 12-bar blues? Putting the free-form crooning first is rather like skipping the foreplay.
