I agree. Completely. I had that suspicion after watching the film, and through a discussion with an LJ friend, I've come to think that this is quite likely. I've bought the novel and plan to read it over winter break to see if I'll find something to support this hypothesis; if I do, I want to write a story from Hakan's point of view exploring this possibility.

That said, I still believe that Oskar and Eli can have the possibility for something more. I like to think that her choosing to leave him, and only coming back in his moment of need, these things may show that, through helping Oskar, Eli has changed. If so, their relationship is especially more beautiful for it.

Oh my god I really needed someone to talk to about this. It walked out of the movie all pleased and excited and like a day later stopped dead in my tracks and was... oh... right. I mean, I agree about them still having the potential to be something more. Eli definitely seems different with Oskar and I would love to think that she is going to treat him differently. It just really freaked me out wondering if he was just a replacement.

That said I would pretty much love to see what you come up with after reading the novel. I don't know if I could handle that myself. And a slightly sillier question, is there a fandom for this somewhere?

I think you're both looking at it the wrong way. Eli is immortal. There's no reason she can't love many mortals over the span of her infinite lifetime. Poor Acid guy obviously loved her very much, to the point where he sacrificed himself - twice! - to save her and her secret. I have no problem beliving that he was once as Oskar is now, but he was getting old and screwing up and didn't want to risk Eli's life over it. But he loved her. He even asked Eli to "stop seeing that boy" out of jealousy before he realized he couldn't help her any more. I like to think it made his sacrifice easier on him, knowing that someone else had finally come along who loved her and could take his place taking care of her.

The greatness of the movie comes from the innate tragedy built in to the happy ending.

Hey, I just got my copy of "Let the Right One In" the other day and plan on reading it as soon as I finish the current book I'm on, so my opinion on this may change once I've read the book. That being said, I think the true horror aspect of this story is realizing that what appears to be an innocent and touching relationship between two children is actually something much more twisted. Eli isn't a child and she isn't nearly as naive as she often behaved in the movie. She was manipulating Oskar, but she did it out of necessity, not out of cruelty. Her need for a companion is a survival instinct, but at the same time, eternity is a awful long time to spend alone. I think that she sought Oskar out because he was alone as well and she believed he would understand her loneliness and would be more willing dedicate himself to her because he wouldn't feel as though he had anything to lose by doing so.
