(Anonymous) 2008-12-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)I've heard those arguments too (for different fandoms), and it always makes me roll my eyes. Words change their meanings. Slash now means a m/m pairing of any sort, be it canon, subtext or two men someone thinks are pretty together. (Ftr, it's a good change, imo, less confusing. One could argue it to be more polarizing, but I'm not sure: are there wars like there used to be about slash v het?)
But it's interesting that the only slash shipwar I've heard about happened in a fandom with canon slash, which gives credence to the idea someone up thread had about shipwars being caused by the (potential) canonicity of a ship.

Well, I've seen fights break out in fandoms where the slash isn't canon, but generally it doesn't get to the "war" stage. Like in Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney is the main slash pairing (actually, it's the main pairing in the fandom, period) and since they're so big, they can pretty much ignore the other slash pairings. But every once in a while the other slash pairings will lash out. The time that I remember most clearly was this time. But that wank wasn't so much about the canonicity of the pairing, but the prevalence of one pairing over the others and general bitching that her pairing doesn't have as big a following.
