The author of the novel I think said they weren't a couple and I was like - really?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't the author say Wei Wuxian and Lan Wang I were the only gay couple, too? I mean... Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao...

yeah that's the author's stance for the novel, which is fair i guess as they're the creator, but i feel like the cql team were like: 'i respect your opinion, but we're gonna ignore that' and upped the shippy aspect of almost every interaction on the show, lxc+jgy and sl+xxc being two very notable ones as well as xue yang just radiating chaotic evil gay energy.

Bless the CQL team for their work, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, yes. And like the other anon said, bless the CQL team!

Hahaha yes bloody hell. So much gay energy.

Xichen and Meng Yao - when LXC said they'd been up late working on the conference or something I immediately thought that was code.

All in all TU may be the gayest program i'be ever watched that was never overtly gay. A real feat tbh considering it was made in China.

my man lxc looked like he was going to have his way with jgy right there in front of everyone when they first met and i respect him for that. i mean... before it turned out jgy was a murder-gremlin, but hey, the heart wants what it wants and i do not judge noble handsome elf-like men.

it really felt like bc they had to work around censorship that they decided to be like: 'fuck it, lets give them multiple gay options to suit everyone's tastes' and i love that for me.

I loved that scene so damn much! I kinda liked Meng Yao in the novel so I knew I was going to like him anyway but Lan Xichen was just so damn decent and polite and beautiful that he immediately became my favourite character. I mean, of course Lan Zhan is hot but he's got nothing on his brother.

it was so goddamn scandalous and i loved every second of it.

i hadn’t read the book before watching the show so i went in blind but ended up loving jgy because i always love me a schemey little murder-gremlin who’s competent and good at staying several steps ahead, until he’s ultimately thwarted. i’m also a sucker for stupid-noble men and when lxc swanned in all his stupid-noble glory i was done for.

She gets a lot of shit for the whole "only two gays in the whole world" stance and I did find it annoying as well because what, you can have zombies and magic swords/instruments and fantasy monsters but more than two gays is unrealistic?
It's more or less a matter of "they're not special anymore if they're not the only gay couple" and "more than one gay couple might take the spotlight of specialness away from them" which... also stupid but she apparently struggled with the secondary romance in her first novel and wasn't happy with it so she decided not to write any secondary (gay) pairings after that.

But yeah, fandom can do what they want and I'll be damned if these two aren't parts of a tragic romance. And the drama crew agreed imo.
