Anyone ever been to an estate sale?

Are they as creepy as the feel like they would be? I feel weird at the idea of pawing over a dead person's things.

I’ve never been to an estate sale (that I know of), just a bunch of yard sales. I have a friend who went to an estate sale that had a ton of American Girl items. All were in near mint condition and many were rare. She was thrilled with her haul, but afterwards felt strangely sad because the lady who had owned the dolls had died alone and her beautiful collection had been left for scores of strangers to paw at and dismantle.

To me it just felt like a really large garage sale and wasn't creepy at all,.. If it helps, I've been on the other side where an estate sale had to be arranged for a relative who'd passed away. We were just grateful to have the estate sale people handle it and it was nice to think that other people would find a use for all of the things that we couldn't/didn't want to keep.

Same, it's basically just a giant yard/garage sale. I've been on both sides and I agree, it's nice to find good homes for stuff. I liked doing it that way much better than just dumping off stuff into a donation bin.

I've been to a few of them, they just seemed like yard sales with more expensive stuff.

I've always wanted to go. I suppose I never really thought about the fact that I would be pawing over a dead person's things...as I often frequent antiques/second hand shops all the time, and some of those things could ostensibly be from someone who is no longer living...

I also always figure that the people who passed away either willed it away in this manner, or their family/caretakers are choosing this on their behalf. We don't take any of it with us, ya know?

I've never been to one because I'm too lazy to search them out, but I helped with my grandaddy's estate sale, and it's really not that bad. The family want people there. They know most of the stuff is dated and not worth much, but they've taken the time and energy to organize and run it because they want to see things go to people who will enjoy them, they don't want to have to deal with all those things themselves, and of course they're hoping for some compensation for their efforts.

No, they're not as far as I know. I love garage sales and I know a few of them have been estate, I've helped my mother and aunt set up one for my grandmother after she passed and it was no different than any other garage sale really. I'm sure some people do get a little attached sometimes they actually have other people they hire to do the selling for them, but idk I'm always respectful with what people want to sell things for, so yeah.

I've been to a few while I was out yard saling of a Saturday (gods, do I miss going to yard sales). I usually don't bother stopping at them anymore though, because although they're generally not that creepy (sometimes sad, though), almost every one I've been to has consisted mainly of overpriced junk that either smells like old pee, old cigarette smoke, or some unholy combination of the two. That may just be unique to my town, though.

I used to be an avid estate saler and I love them so much. You can get a lot of really good quality things for reasonable prices. I never found it creepy. I mean, something has to be done with the stuff. As much as families might want to, you can't keep everything. Also, a lot of people have living estate sales when they're downsizing or moving into a retirement home/to Florida, so it's not necessarily a dead person's things.

I went to one rather late so everything decent had been picked up by antique dealers already, but I enjoyed walking around an expensive house. I don't know. Going to antique shops, thrift shops, and probably yard sales you're going to be looking at stuff that belongs to dead people, so I wasn't really creeped out. Just tried to show some tact since obviously there were relatives of this person about.
