The essay was quite notably not directed at GRRM's publishers, it was directed at his fans. And he actually admits right in the essay that even he was having trouble with deadlines towards the end of Sandman's run, and implies that's part of why he hasn't done another series. Series are hard.

I think people who bitch about the essay are also forgetting the context in which it was written. It wasn't an out of nowhere rant, it was a response to a frankly pretty ridiculous and entitled message from a fan. (Seriously, the dude was suggesting that writers blogging about their life instead posting updates on their work progress means they're slacking, and that having a social media presence should obligate writers to write faster, which is completely absurd.)
