I understand having an expensive hobby and being broke. I've been there, too, nonny. But why not just save whatever you can and buy the doll you really want when you have the money? Even if it's a couple of bucks every couple of weeks, it's still something and you will reach your goal eventually. And even if it takes a couple of years and for whatever reason you aren't into BJDs anymore after that time, you'll have a nice little bit of money save to do whatever with?

OP here

Yeah, I know but it's just, I am dirt poor. I am not simply "dirt poor" because I don't put in effort, I am "dirt poor" because I live in a poor nation so my wage - which is a pretty "okay" wage for my age range (25-30) here (as I DO try hard...) doesn't amount to the US minimum wage. Furthermore, the import taxes are ridiculously high (to the point that one may end up paying double the price of the thing, particularly if it's luxury goods.) and there aren't any "official resellers" so to speak, plus the whole importing process/business is screwed up so I am supposed to - literally - invest a ridiculous amount of hard-earned money in foreign goods that may never even reach my home. (And if they do, well they're resin dolls so it's not impossible that I may have to glue a considerable amount of parts if it's not greatly packed) so it's REALLY not that simple.

Really, not trying to "justify" that or be "anti-artist" or "pro-recast" at all. If I was, trust me I wouldn't be sharing this on F!S, I'd have gotten my recast and be happy already. Just venting honestly.

Oh damn, nonny, that does suck. :(

Thanks :( ♥

Yeah, it sucks when US prices and shipping amount to an impossible price - my country raised the amount you have to spend before paying import taxes a few years ago, and it's made everything so much cheaper for me, it's amazing! (I mean, it's still expensive, but it nearly halved the price.) I hope that a doll fair shows up in your country one day.

Yeah, that's the case, it really does. :( That's so nice! Thanks a lot!

Being aware of how expensive BJD's are AND how certain groups can be VERY... um... arrogant (I avoid the fandom after hearing things years ago; doubted they changed, but yeah) AND hearing your situation: I am so sorry. That REALLY sucks.

Honestly, I know some people hate re-casts, but I don't get it *IF* the doll is like never going to be sold again -and- is noted as a re-cast (so there's no lies or not knowing) or what not. But, I know that puts me in the Uh Oh category can-of-worms area of others.

But urgh.

I wanted to suggest a Facebook community that welcomes the sales of official and non official BJDs for various prices, but considering your situation with all the imports? I guess it wouldn't be helpful =\

I wish you the best of luck in eventually getting there if you're able to - and finding a group (?) to interact with if you want that won't be judgy and rude.

Ahaha, yes. Thank you!!

Sincerely, I kind of think that as well when I see other people's pictures - if they're saying "so, my doll is a recast (but I like them regardless)" and enjoying themselves, not flaunting at all I think... they're not trying to scam anyone and they probably got that because they didn't know better/were gifted/etc. so I think, you do you. IMO it IS different from flaunting recast dolls, owning 0 legits and saying they're all legit when prompted. Anyway, I get being anti-recast but ACTIVELY seeking people who just wanted to have fun to bully, that is... IDGI really. So I don't see myself ever wanting to associate with those people even if I am very much pro-artist myself. :/ But coming from a fandom where people shame even legit dolls for being "ugly"/"weird"/basically unexpensive, I shouldn't be surprised. Sigh.

Yeah, sadly. It seems that many local legit BJD owners purchased them while travelling abroad, or through someone who did, whether from the secondhand market or by ordering them and asking them to be delivered while they(/a relative/friend) are abroad. One of my friends was planning on going to Japan just before COVID-19 happened and I thought of asking them to get an used/unassembled BJD on Mandarake or something. That seemed to be the way to go for me, but this COVID-19 induced worldwide "lockdown" is making me even more anxious about it, because... who knows when anyone will be able to do that now. Probably not anytime soon lol.

Thank you SO much!! That's so nice, and I hope you can enjoy your hobby peacefully and just have fun with it too. ♥ Sending you the best.

You probably won't see this, as it's like. A month and a half old. And things happened that prevented me from replying.

I agree. So long as there's up-front about things, then there's no reason to be up in arms over it. I completely agree! Yeah. I've "stalked" the community for a long time, and seen the ugly of the entitled arrogance. There are lots of good, too! But, yeah.

Oh no ;; That's terrible timing! There ARE third party websites that you can use (https://www.biginjap.com/en/content/16-forwarding-terms is one, iirc), if you don't mind the shipping wait due to Covid.

Thank you!! I hope you can find a peaceful corner in the comm and get the doll(s) you'd most enjoy~! ♥ !

OP, I'm so sorry you're having that experience in your fandom. I collect a variety of dolls and, while there's drama and squabbling and the occasional asshole, most people are very sweet and encouraging.

For what it's worth, I love the more artistic side of my doll fandoms. I love the creative photography, the beautiful faceups, and the pretty clothes and accessories that people make.

I also understand the frustration of wanting to buy a doll only for it to be out of your price range. There are so many dolls I want to buy, but I have to limit myself to the ones I really want, so I pick only one or two at a time to save up for. Sometimes the dolls I want do sell out before I buy them, which is extremely disappointing, but then I still have some money saved up that I can use for buying the next one I want.

That's so nice and it makes me very happy. I love the fact that there are people like this, so I can indirectly indulge in these things too, it's really nice. I'm not even that good at crafting so maybe I'd be frustrated if I had one, but seeing other people's works, some people are really "talented". There's some amazing dolls (and doll owners!) out there.

Yeah, it's good motivation for saving up after all! Hope you can get the next doll you like!

I have a few bjd's, and they are all from the cheaper end of the scale. Between the exchange rate and the shipping (I'm in Australia and there are no local sellers), the really nice dolls are just out of my price range.

I was a member of Den of Angels for a while, and whilst I personally never had any problems, the friend who invited me warned me that it could be quite elitist and nasty, and anything about recasts was totally banned.

I'm not a very creative person, so I'm in awe of what people can do with their dolls, and the clothes they make.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-23 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you. Honestly, I don't even look too much into BJD's more "technical" side and I kind of envy those people who see a faceplate and go "oh, isn't that the Limited Edition _ in _ scale which sold 3 units back in 2011?" because I think I'd go crazy in anger/jealousy if I could ever recognize so many models and not own any of them, lol. I'd rather go "hey that's a cute doll, nice faceup, great posing" and only have a vague understanding of models and prices.

Well... yeah. I like browsing it and there are nice people too, it's... not as bad as the anti-recast confessions blogs, that's just scary to me. People say shit like "eww, why did they buy such a CHEAP legit?" and it's pretty bad. Not to say the pro-recast communities and their "whatever, just let artists starve!" are any better.

Right?? As I enjoy sewing and painting myself, I see some works and am in awe. It's amazing what people manage to do in their own homes. :) Not just flashy costumes though, I also like seeing dolls that just feel like a miniature of a real person (...or a real anime character more accurately) and think, wow, that's meticulous work.

Sorry you can't currently have the doll(s) you want, anon. I know I enjoy mine and hope that someday you get the opportunity to enjoy the hobby how you want to, too.
