The story certainly made me feel guilty as an adolescent, as it was designed to do.

Grown-up me wondered why LeGuin didn't a) give all her money to children's charities or b) walk away from Omelas herself. She lived just a few miles from Canada which is a less shitty society than the USA, and would, presumably, have been welcomed as a migrant.

Look, I get it, you have to convince yourself that she's a phoney because it's the only way you can deal with the guilt. This is heavy stuff. I don't blame you.

The world is complicated. Sometimes we disappoint ourselves. All we can do is our best, and that feels like so little. You have to learn to live like that.

Or you can keep looking for excuses to be an ass.

I've done hundreds of hours of volunteering. I wouldn't count myself an activist, though.

I'd say that the fact that you don't consider yourself an activist is part of the problem. Seriously, stop guilt-tripping yourself and then maybe you won't feel the need to put down other activists.
