Maybe the people from Omelas think the sane thing. Maybe they think the child would just be replaced by another one, so why bother?
It's not like changing things for good is "within their reach", as you say!

But if one person deals with the problem that is directly in front of them, right there, right then, then that's one more person who's not complicit. And no, walking away from the glory of Omelas doesn't count.
