I'm pretty sure that the only reason "A Confederacy of Dunces" makes all those "100 books you have to read before you die" lists is because the author killed himself before it was published. Even for the era and the genre, it's an awkward, painful slog.

I haven't read this book, but it wouldn't surprise me if your theory was correct, given how often people get praised and recognized for their genius, perceived or real, after they're gone.

You ever wonder what it would be like if Holden Caufield were a "comically" fat and unhygienic 30-something who lived with his mom? And also it's set in New Orleans in the 60s, so there's some half-hearted discussing of social issues and some holdover Red Scare nonsense and a bad attempt at writing dialect? If so, have I got a book for you!
