I'm still too pissed that they a) never managed to give the P3 MC some male LIs after they were already doing the work for the female MC or at least made all the female SLs have platonic options because i could never see him as straight and in conclusion never maxed out a single female SL for him.
And b) I'm still pissed that they didn't include Yusuke as a LI in 5. I also see the 4 MC as pretty straight for some reason.
So yeah, there is no way I'll trust them on any alleged "queer" content as they have proven to handle it poorly )if they handled it at all and weren't too much of a coward for it).

You know, this is an unpopular opinion but I think P3 is the most "homophobic" of all Persona games, ironically so (as it made the series popular-ish in the West) because ... Come on, it's literally Bury Your Gays all the way. (Spoilers ahead!)
There's literally one canon bi(-for-you) character, and that's Ryoji who you can literally choose to kill (fine, that's not the Good Ending but... well considering how he clearly references Kaworu Nagisa even just that not being the Good Ending is a good idea.) and let's not go into the Shinjiro/Akihiko matter. The characters who play on queer stereotypes (such as Ryoji himself or Bebe, and for some reason I remember feeling somewhat like this towards Akinari or some other maybe...) are just, well, not very well-written compared to others either. I remember being very displeased at it. But, well, at least... it's still better than most games, ironically.
As for Yusuke LI matters... That is why I can't help but headcanon MC as straight. Not to be too biased but, I'd love to get to date Yusuke as a player and I bet many people would, it's unlikely that they'd just pointlessly cockblock us. I like to think there's a reason for that in the narrative and the reason would be exactly showing that he and MC aren't supposed to be romantically compatible no matter how nice/cool/cute/everything Yusuke is. Hmm, as for P4 - he might be as the male SLs are pretty "no homo" too, but they're still more "well, maybe homo"/would probably fit romance better than P3 or P5 I feel. Not sure if that's because they backed off on it after writing them though.

Anyway, I totally get what you mean even though I'm apparently debunking it - it's really why I don't throw around that headcanon after all, lol. It can get really problematic. While we're at it, though, I personally also feel that bad/imperfect representation is better than no representation at all which seems to be the way to go for most games and game franchises sadly. Shoving it under a rug is obviously way easier than dealing with worldwide criticism, so props for them anyway. But surely I am biased!

Oh I agree that P3 as a whole was pretty homophobic which is why I'm still bitter that they didn't take the chance while they were working on all the additional content for P3P to add some same sex LIs for both MCs.
I the end, though, I think saying "it's the narrative that makes the MC super straight" is kinda letting the homophobic studio off the hook. Those characters read as straight because the studio was too homophobic and/or cowardly to write them any other way. That's what annoys me.

Hmm, do you mean for FES? I am at a loss regarding what you mean maybe because I never got ahead much on P3P (ironically mostly because of burying ShinjiAki too... Once was enough.) so. Sorry!
As I said before well, don't disagree at all. But honestly, personally, I am kind of glad for that - as we know homophobia is still around, sadly, some (many) people (particularly Privileged Straight Cis Males around the world, who... Are often game critics etc.) might disregard the series as a whole if talk gets out that it's a "gay series!!" so I am glad they are not going for propaganda/anything that might picture the series as TOO queer-friendly/Queer Media (because well, it IS out of the box enough to date a same-sex character in a JRPG even if it's kinda Played For Laughs.) but still choosing to occasionally represent queer characters (and different stereotypes often tearing them apart). But all of this is taking into account that it's a JRPG and it's just how JRPGs often go, and it didn't translate well in more than one occasion (... Particularly the issues in P4 just don't translate well to a worldwide audience IMHO.) and honestly I am also glad people out there would beg to differ. :)

Basically, for P3P, they added all the male LIs for the female MC but couldn't be bothered to just... slightly tweak them for the male MC (and vice versa for the female Lis for the female MC). It wouldn't really have been that much more work and considering it would've had solid fanbase support idk why they didn't take that chance (nah I'm lying, we all know why they didn't).

Oh, I get it. I mean, P3P came after P3FES so I just thought... yeah, it's just natural that they didn't add the male LI SLs for P3/P3FES after P3P? But of course I don't doubt that they could write it (...it's really not that complicated) but rather not. (I mean, they COULD just not have killed off Shinjiro in P3 so we wouldn't have to resort to AU/past fics! Yes I bitter!)
And yeah, as I said, sadly... the world is still full of cis male homophobic game critics. It is, sadly, just the way our world is now.

Oh, and - I forgot to add, sorry - I can't help but believe the fact that it did not translate well was one reason for them to avoid the topic altogether in P5 in hopes of reaching a broader audience, and kept to the usual Cute BL fanservice and a few "so, this is how real life homophobia in Japan goes, it sucks in here, thanks" NPCs thrown around. It annoys me a lot that it doesn't look like it was entirely the dev's fault that it didn't translate well though.
