Without spoilers, in Royal it is heavily hinted that Akechi is "canon" interest for the protagonist and he is the one character that has borderline romantic actions towards the MC

Aw, this makes me sad as a protag/Ryuji shipper. I would have hoped you could get more action with him (like give him presents and stuff). That I can't romance my vulgar boy (or any of the guys, really) is one of two gripes I have with P5.

Even in P5 I thought that Akechi had a thing for the MC, so it's nice if that is expanded a bit in Royals, at least. I really wish P5 wasn't so damn straight.

I feel you on this too lol. Maybe it's more a matter of "shipper heart, broken" than just it being a cliche why I am bitter at knowing this.

Same here. While I do appreciate the shuake we got in Royal I wish we could get an actual confirmation/chance to romance the guys outside of mods. (And everyone calling them out on being so gay. Even Mona goes "Oh you've been together with Akechi a lot lately, not that this is a bad thing! I support you!")

But then again, even the Japanese side of the fandom (mostly the guys) would probably go hysteric if something like that was announced. (Remember Tales of Zestiria with the Alisha and SorMik discourse)

Right? Oh, I'm kind of curious now. It does sound to me (as I haven't experienced it yet?) like fujoshi-pandering somehow, but I really got to play to know.
Oh, SorMik definitely. Tales of is another franchise that goes back and forth a lot on "thats gay" and "whats gay", yeah, it's not just people in the West who are plagued by cis male homophobic gamer dudebros huh.

As sort of a sidenote. On that matter... It's why I respect P4 so much too. (Spoilers!) There we have nearly Everyone Is Gay, which is kind of shocking in itself... but Yosuke, the "relatable/average [and homophobic] friend" who is an immature elite guy with a bearshounen sleeping in his closet. All of Yosuke is a big canon "oh, um, okay" and I think that sort of irony and contradiction in the nature of homophobia is also something that they wanted to poke fun at. And I just want to give a toast to whoever wrote it.

It gets worse when you think about how Yosuke had a canon love confession dubbed, then later deleted from the game, BUT the voiceclip is still there.

It gets funnier when you consider the voiceclip was dubbed in Japanese and English.
